1991 Draft Picks 4-6 Analysis

*SP Jose ” Thrillseeker” Sanchez

With the 4th selection in the 1991 TBC Draft Los Angeles put their stock in the young left hander from Snohomish, West Virginia. The 18 year old put up impressive numbers his senior year sporting a 0.45 ERA with 179 k’s in only 100 IP, tied together with a perfect 10-0 record in 14 starts. Most scouts would agree the level of competition was sub par and my take on the kid is that he “understands the basics, but won’t work hard enough to improve on them.” The performance does not lie, but the concerns with the level of competition and character flaws are a very real thing. He is a wildcard pick in what is a weaker class of Starting Pitchers. *Potentials* 5/5/6 6/4/6/7

*OF Isaiah Greene*

The #5 Pick by Denver was a contact machine straight out of Annandale, Virginia. This kid looks to have the stuff, batting AVG .487 with a .540 OBP and 33 stolen bases in 27 games, he looks like a promising top of the lineup hitter. Another kid playing competition below his level but seems like a smart young kid. Defense may not be Greene’s strong suit but if you throw him in RF he won’t kill you defensively and if the bat pans out its very well worth it. The kid is smarter than he is fast which may have boosted his stolen bases in high school so don’t expect the exact same at the next level. *Potentials 7/7/6/4/6 5/5/6 D*
*Grade A-*

*Luke “Cool Papa Schaffer*

How can you go wrong selecting “Cool Papa” At the #6 pick the Loggers are hopping this kid is the real deal. Out of Nashua South High School Luke earned his sweet nickname by putting on a show every time he touched the diamond. Though this is another young talent that played at a competition level beneath him, he had no remorse for the opponents putting up a .520 AVG with a .980 SLG percentage in 22 games. Cool Papa showed he could swing the lumber but his defense remains suspect, he does not look like a player that has any future playing defense in the infield without being a liability and the inflation of his number from lesser competition give me concern. As far as Luke himself the kid is nothing special, but does seem to be very loyal to the few he’s close with, i wouldn’t worry about his personality one bit. *Potentials 5/7/5/6/5 5/5/4/5 D*
*Grade B-*
