Rockets Blasting Off?

Cape Canaveral, FL – The Rockets are ready to blast off in 1990, but it appears they won’t be doing so from the Launching Pad. Information obtained from a high ranking official within the club’s front office points towards the team’s imminent departure. The source, who wishes to remain anonymous, said owner Carl Boykin and other team officials spent the entire weekend in Boykin’s office – leaving only to use the restroom. The emergency work session was called by Boykin immediately after receiving a registered letter from the Cape Canaveral Sports Authority, owners of the Launching Pad. It is believed the letter was informing the team of the immediate cancellation of their lease. At this point no other information is available as repeated requests to the team have gone unanswered. 1. Update – After spending all morning staking out the Rockets team offices, owner Carl Boykin emerged at 12:13 PM. Alone and walking rapidly toward his car, I asked Mr. Boykin if he would like to comment on the information in my blog post. After an initial “No comment” reply, Boykin turned around and faced my tape recorder. Here is what he had to say.

“I don’t know from whom you are getting your information, but its spot on. On Friday afternoon, the Sports & Exhibition Authority did abruptly cancel our lease at the Launching Pad. After spending all of Friday evening on the phone with the Authority, my lawyers then assured me there was nothing more we could do.”

He continued with, “We immediately began looking into alternative locations. And, at this time, we have not finalized any agreement. I can say we have narrowed the search and are deciding between two cities. Unfortunately, neither of them are in the state of Florida. I’m going home to spend the remainder of today with my family. We will weigh the pros and cons of the two locations.”

Mr. Boykin concluded by saying, “I’m hopeful we will be able to decide by the end of the day. The S&A has put the team in a bind. With Spring Training and the WBC underway, we really have no time to waste.” Boykin then turned and walked to his car.
